As a leader of the Suu Waukeenyans I have choreographed over twenty dances for this dance team. For each home football and basketball game, we perform two timeout dances and occasionally a halftime as well. To be a leader I think it is more than choreographing dances and teaching them. While running this team I wanted to create a learning environment for my dancers as well. I have given my dancers the opportunity to work together to create their own dances. By doing this, not only does it allow these girls to get choreography experience, but it sets an environment that allows the dancers to feel confident and comfortable with each other as teammates.
Not only did we work together to create this dance, we taught a special friend of ours a section of the dance and asked him to perform with us, Through this experience, my dancers got to choreograph, teach, and become closer as a team. As a future teacher and coach, I hope to push these kind of activities upon my students and dancers. These are the kinds of experiences that people will learn from because they are actively engaged in the project. When I started this dance team from scratch, I had no idea what I was doing. However, I kept pushing past every trial and speed bump in the way and it has led me to where I am today. Over the past four years, this team has grown and exceeded any expectation that I could have ever had.
