The Suu Dance Team rises from the dead
11/9/2016 Cedar City Utah
The Suu dance team was cut in March of 2013 due to budget cuts. Nicole Mikkelson, a freshman at the time, was not going to let that be the end of her college dancing career. Nicole decided to turn the dissolved team into a club at the university, with the help of a friend. Her goal was to maintain the performance quality and value that the team previously had before being cut. This is exactly what she has done for the last four years.
Nicole was in charge of putting the team together. She had to hold tryouts and choose her team wisely. Being the leader of this team she was responsible for choreographing the dances, cleaning up the dances to get them ready for performances, cutting and editing the music for each dance, scheduling performances, fundraising money for the team, and many other tasks. Not only does she coach the team but she dances with the team as well. Nicole has kept the Waukeenyans running for the last four years. Each year the team has improved and has exceeded everyone's expectations. The team performs at Suu athletic events, community events, and have been guest performers around the state.
Nicole Mikkelson will be graduating from Southern Utah University this spring with a dance education degree. The dance team that she brought back from the dead has now become part of the Suu Athletic Department once again. She hopes to continue to be the coach of the Waukeenyans after she graduates. The Waukeenyans have gained support from the students, the university, the community, and the dance world . This started out as a simple edge project for the university, however it became much more than that. ###
